Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy

Alberta University of the Arts (AUArts) is subject to the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (“FOIP” or “the Act”) under section 1(j) of the Act; as such, AUArts is committed to ensuring the lawful and consistent collection, use, disclosure, and protection of information under its custody and control.

The Access to Information and Protection of Privacy Policy authorizes and informs users of information in the custody of AUArts to operate in accordance with the act.

What is FOIP?

The Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy (FOIP) Act is Provincial legislation that has three parts...

  1. Freedom of Information or Part 1 of the Act, provides people with a right-of-access to records in the custody or control of public bodies, subject to specific exceptions set out in the Act. Alberta University of the Arts is a public body under the FOIP Act.
  2. Protection of Privacy or Part 2 of the Act, provides the rules and provisions that control how Alberta University of the Arts may operationally collect, use, and disclose personal information in order to protect the privacy of individuals. Part 2 also provides a process for individuals to request access to and corrections of their own personal information.
  3. Roles and Powers of Information and Privacy Commissioner and Reviews and Complaints or Part 3 of the Act, outlines the role and powers of the Information and Privacy Commissioner as well as how to pursue reviews and complaints regarding access to information or protection of privacy.

Access to information

How do I request information at Alberta University of the Arts under the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy (FOIP) Act?

Alberta University of the Arts provides information to the public on an informal basis through its operational departments by means of routine disclosure.

The University has also taken steps to proactively disclose information that is requested by the public on a regular basis, which is routinely made available online on the AUArts website.

Proactive disclosure, or active dissemination, occurs when information is periodically released by a public body without a formal access to information request under the FOIP Act.

A formal access-to-information request is not required if the information can be routinely disclosed through the informal process.
