The Arts and Business School of Practice connects creative professionals to the business world to learn how to more effectively express and capitalize on their vocation.

Building a career as an entrepreneurial artist is about creating community, constructing opportunity through planning, managing money, gaining exposure in the right circles and with the right people, and knowing how to market and brand distinctiveness.  

This program is designed to empower emerging artists and assist them in developing their entrepreneurial skill set in order to enhance their practice and career.

Career Pathways

There are a variety of industries that benefit from a booming artistic community, including advertising, publishing, design, music, architecture, investment, and manufacturing and production. City planners also look to entrepreneurial artists and designers to create distinctive city features through transit, tourism and public safety.

Program Goals

  • Provide hands-on experiences through practical projects, teamwork and simulations that expose participants to all aspects of entrepreneurship within the arts. 
  • Provide specialized knowledge and skills needed to effectively lead and manage arts and cultural departments, programs and organizations in a wide range of industries.

Admission Requirements

  1. Applicants should have, at a minimum, a Degree or Diploma from a recognized post-secondary institution. 

    Canadian residents with international qualifications must provide an International Qualifications Assessment Service (IQAS) evaluation indicating an equivalent level of education.
     
  2. Language Proficiency – English Language Proficiency (if educated outside Canada) 

    A score of 83% or higher on an official Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) on the Internet-based test (iBT), with a minimum score of 20 in each of the four testing sections, or 220 on the computer-based test (CBT). 

    A score of 70% or higher on the Canadian Academic English Language (CAEL) assessment, or a score of 70, or higher on the computer edition (CAEL CE).

    A score of 6.5 or higher on the International English Language Test (IELTS).

Completion Requirements

In addition to completing the required coursework, students will participate in co-curricular ensembles that further their artistic skills while building their entrepreneurial skill sets and abilities. 
 
Students are required to complete nine required courses, including a capstone project and can choose from two elective options: 

  1. Complete one elective course.

    OR
     
  2. Complete at least 36 hours of a co-curricular ensemble, which can include participation in authorized professional development workshops for a total of ten courses. Students can submit professional development taken elsewhere for assessment and consideration as a Professional Development equivalency.

Upon completion, students will receive a non-credit certificate administered by Alberta University of the Arts School of Continuing Education and Professional Development.
