Mental Illness Awareness Week | 2017

Mental Illness Awareness Week (MIAW) is an annual national public education campaign designed to help open the eyes of Canadians to the reality of mental illness. The week was established in 1992 by the Canadian Psychiatric Association, and is now coordinated by the Canadian Alliance on Mental Illness and Mental Health (CAMIMH) in cooperation with all its member organizations and many other supporters across Canada.

ACAD + ACADSA are here to support you during Mental Illness Awareness Week (MIAW)

Please join us for the following events:

Monday, October 2 - Kick Off (ACAD Main Mall)

  • MIAW Launches at ACAD
  • Information Booth to provide resources + raise awareness regarding mental illness, and Post-it wall for people to post messages about mental illness and mental health. Both will be up throughout the week.

Tuesday, October 3 - Mental Health Literacy Workshop (Mental Health 101)

WHERE: ACAD Boardroom

12 p.m. - 1 p.m.

During this one-hour wellness session participants will:

  • Know the difference between mental health and mental illness
  • Be able to identify signs of poor mental health
  • Feel more equipped to respond to someone showing signs of poor mental health
  • Know about (and be able to refer to) resources available
  • Have some strategies to promote or improve their own mental health

Wednesday, October 4

  • Be Keen and Wear Green to Raise Awareness for Mental Health - ALL DAY
  • Puppy Room for ACAD students, faculty and staff in the ACAD Boardroom from 12:00 PM - 2:00 PM (register for the Puppy Room)

Thursday, October 5 - National Depression Screening Day (Main Mall)

ACAD is collaborating with community partners to help Defy Depression by raising awareness of this issue and encourages everyone to get screened for depression and seek help if needed.

National Depression Screening Day is on Thursday, October 5 and is a weeklong collaboration where the Calgary Counseling Centre is offering a 2-minute, anonymous and free, screening test to everyone.  Take the test between October 2-8, 2017 by visiting
