Alberta College of Art + Design Hosts Film Screening that Raises Awareness of Visual AIDS’ longstanding Day With(out) Art Project

Calgary, AB – Alberta College of Art + Design (ACAD) invites you to a free screening of ALTERNATE ENDINGS, RADICAL BEGINNINGS, the 28th iteration of Visual AIDS’ longstanding Day With(out) Art project on Friday, December 1 at 7 p.m. in ACAD’s Stanford Perrott Lecture Theatre.

Curated by Erin Christovale and Vivian Crockett for Visual AIDS, the video program prioritizes Black narratives within the ongoing AIDS epidemic, commissioning seven new and innovative short videos from artists Mykki Blanco, Cheryl Dunye & Ellen Spiro, Reina Gossett, Thomas Allen Harris, Kia LaBeija,Tiona Nekkia McClodden and Brontez Purnell.

In spite of the impact of HIV/AIDS within Black communities, these stories and experiences are constantly excluded from larger artistic and historical narratives. In 2016 African Americans represented 44% of all new HIV diagnoses in the United States.

Given this context, it is increasingly urgent to feature a myriad of stories that consider and represent the lives of those housed within this statistic. ALTERNATE ENDINGS, RADICAL BEGINNINGS seeks to highlight the voices of those that are marginalized within broader Black communities nationwide, including LGBTQ+ people.

Dr. Mark Clintberg, Interim Chair of the School of Critical and Creative Studies, is thrilled that the institution supports the screening and a cause near and dear to his heart.

“ACAD prides itself in the diversity of its students, faculty, and staff and to have a screening like ALTERNATE ENDINGS, RADICAL BEGINNINGS reinforces the campus’ support for the marginalized and stereotyped,” he said. “We need to raise the profile of these issues and support everyone regardless of status, race or gender identity and hosting socially conscious screenings opens the door for further conversation.”

ALTERNATE ENDINGS, RADICAL BEGINNINGS screening is Friday, December 1 at 7 p.m. in ACAD’s Stanford Perrot Lecture Theatre – 1407 14 – Avenue NW, Calgary, Alberta. Dr. Clintberg will be in attendance to introduce the film.
