ACAD is the Proud Sponsor of Sled Island 2015 Visual Art Programming
June 24-28, 2015
Sled Island is pleased to announce our visual art program for 2015! This year is all about exploring the boundaries of art, music and performance with projects that disrupt, reframe and challenge the theoretical and physical spaces of these complimentary art forms. Performativity, temporality, and transience are common themes, but most of all, art at this year’s festival is about collaboration and exchange. Whether between artists, organizations, audiences or disciplines, many of the projects in this year’s selection exist only through partnership and participation. So, get involved! Bring your pals and savour the shared spaces and experiences where this year’s programming thrives.
To mention just some of the many projects that we are excited about: Lisa Lipton’s multi-venue performance crosses the genres of film, mixed-media installation, performance, theatre, music and drumming; the films of UK artist and filmmaker Dick Jewell reveal the infamous nightlife of iconic London clubs; Nicole Kelly Westman and Ryan Mathieson bring together conceptually distinct and geographically dispersed practices for a single collaborative performance; the annual Sled Island Poster Show pairs local artists with musicians playing the festival for the creation of limited edition hand silk-screened posters; and offsite/between-site projects by Jolie Bird, Natasha Jensen and Dana Buzzee, as well as Jill Stanton and José Luis Torres, bridge the physical spaces of Sled Island through guerrilla wheat pasting, subversive commentary and site-specific interventions.
Presented in conjunction with Sled Island, WRECK CITY Presents DEMO TAPE invites over 45 artists, musicians, writers, and performers to make site-specific art, music, and discussion at the slated-for-demolition Penguin Car Wash.
Happening at visual art, music, and offsite venues, visual art at Sled Island 2015 includes projects by: Kyle Berger and Stephen Harper, Sylvain Beaudry, Jolie Bird, Dylan Cameron, HOLYJÅCKÅL, Natasha Jensen and Dana Buzzee, Dick Jewell, Lisa Lipton, Neal Moignard, Sarah Nordean, Ashley Ohman, Rebecca Reid and Ema Clarke, r.p.m., Lane Shordee, Jill Stanton, Cody Swinkels, José Luis Torres, Justin Waddell, and Nicole Kelly Westman and Ryan Mathieson.
Special thanks go to visual art at Sled Island sponsor Alberta College of Art + Design, who have this to say about the partnership:
“ACAD is proud to partner with Sled Island this year and to join the festival in working closely with ACAD students and recent alumni to share some of Calgary's most cutting edge and diverse artists and designers with festival-goers. The goal of the partnership is two-fold; to intensify the visual art component of Sled Island and to showcase the breadth of incredible work coming out of ACAD from students, alumni, and faculty.”
Other presenting partners include: Arts Commons, Avalanche!, the Calgary Municipal Land Corporation, EMMEDIA, the Marion Nicoll Gallery, Secret Eight Project Space, Stride Gallery, Studio C, The New Gallery, TRUCK Contemporary Art, and Untitled Art Society.
In addition to visual art, Sled Island will welcome over 250 bands, film, comedy and special events to over 30 venues across Calgary from June 24 - 28, 2015. Passes and tickets are available at Sled Island.
