Alberta University of the Arts Announces Fall Semester 2020 Plan

Calgary, AB. (May 29, 2020): Alberta University of the Arts announced the university’s plan for reopening in Fall 2020 today. Dr. Daniel Doz, President and CEO confirmed that considering current COVID-19 health restrictions, AUArts would be opening for the Fall Semester 2020 in a modified mode of remote instruction with limited access to campus studio facilities and equipment.
“After thoughtful consideration and planning, I would like to announce that we look forward to welcoming students this Fall for continued remote instruction with limited access to campus studio facilities and equipment,” said Dr. Doz.

“As much as we would have liked to fully resume normal campus operations, public health orders and guidelines do not permit us from safely doing so at this time. Through consultations with government and health officials, we know that additional waves of infection could occur during the flu season. Simply put, we will place our community’s health, safety and wellbeing above all other considerations.”

This decision permits the AUArts academic team time to focus on finalizing robust, quality courses for a new online delivery model and allows staff and faculty additional time to focus on supports to ensure the best possible learning experience for students.
As well, the university’s Educational Art Technicians are developing protocols for at home studios to provide guidance on health, safety and equipment use for each program area. With digital access, students will be able to complete most courses anywhere they reside. With recently changed regulations regarding student study permits, AUArts confirmed remote learning will include international students.

“While this Fall semester is going to be different, what remains the same is our commitment to ensuring students succeed in their chosen area of study, while providing a high-quality art, craft and design education,” said Dr. Doz.

Access to the university campus will increase when physical distancing measures relax, and the right resources are assembled to do so safely. Until that time, the university staff and faculty have been advised they will continue to collaborate from home.
