Alberta University of the Arts Grads Win Prestigious BMO 1st Art! Competition

Two 2020 AUArts graduates have received the top prizes in the 18th annual BMO 1st Art! Competition.

The BMO 1st Art! celebrates the creativity of art school students from over 100 post-secondary institutions across Canada. Every year BMO Financial Group invites the deans and instructors of undergraduate-level certificate, diploma, or degree programs in studio art to select from their graduating classes three students whose ability and imagination place them 1st among their peers. A selection committee reviews the submissions and chooses one winner from every province and territory to be first in their region.

Simone Elizabeth Saunders, BFA ’20, Fibre has been announced as the overall National Winner for her work “It Matters” and Jasmine MacGregor BFA ‘20, Sculpture has been announced as the Regional Alberta Winner for “Anishinaabekwe (Ojibway woman)”. Simone has been awarded $15,000 and Jasmine has been awarded $7,500 for their winning submissions.

A virtual exhibition featuring all 13 winners is hosted online by the Art Museum at the University of Toronto and runs September 15 - October 16, 2020.  Full catalogue and details from the exhibition
