Alberta University of the Arts (AUArts) is proud to celebrate Alex Janvier (CM, AOE, RCA, LLD) receiving the honour of having an Edmonton middle school named after him.
Alex Janvier, Denesuline, from the Cold Lake First Nations, Treaty 6 Territory, has been a professional artist for decades. He is renowned for his distinct curved lines and use of bright colour combinations. Janvier received a Fine Arts Diploma with Honors in 1960 back when AUArts was Alberta College of Art and was the institution’s first Indigenous graduate.
The Edmonton Public School Board made the announcement on May 14, 2019 that Alex is one-of-three community-building Albertans to be bestowed with this honour. The schools will be named after Janvier, Aleda Patterson and the late Garth Worthington. They are scheduled to open in September 2021.
As well, Alex was the recipient of AUArt’s first Honorary MFA as a university on May 16, 2019.
