Alberta University of the Arts alum shortlisted for 2019 Sobey Art Award

AUArts would like to congratulate an alum for their exemplary accomplishment. Kablusiak (BFA'16) was shortlisted for a 2019 Sobey Art Award in the Prairies and the North category!
Created in 2001, the Sobey Art Award has had an undeniable impact on the careers of young Canadian contemporary artists. This year it will present $240,000 in prize money and three artists from the longlist will be selected by the jury to take part in the Sobey Art Award Residencies Program. Finally, one shortlisted artist will be selected by Fogo Island Arts to attend an annual residency.
The 2019 Sobey Art Award is jointly administered by the National Gallery of Canada and the Sobey Art Foundation.
Let's meet Kablusiak:

Kablusiak is an Inuvialuk artist and curator based in Mohkínstsis (Calgary) and a board member of Stride Gallery. They have recently exhibited work at Art Mûr (Montreal) as part of the Biennale d’art contemporain autochtone, and at the Athens School of Fine Arts in Greece, as part of the Platforms Project. In addition, Kablusiak and three other Inuit curators will be creating the inaugural exhibition of the new Inuit Art Centre in 2020. Kablusiak uses art and humour to address cultural displacement. The lighthearted nature of their practice extends gestures of empathy and solidarity; these interests invite reconsideration of the perceptions of contemporary indigeneity.

AUArts would like to congratulate all the shortlisted nominees.
