AUArts Alumna and lead designer at Will Creative redefines AUArts identity
AUArts Alumna and lead designer at Will Creative redefines AUArts identity for its future as one of Western Canada's only art, craft + design universities
Allison Chambers works to change perspective around university by challenging the community to see things through a different lens.
The Government of Alberta announced Alberta University of the Arts (AUArts), formerly Alberta College of Art + Design (ACAD), became the only undergraduate university dedicated to art, craft and design in the province on Thursday, January 17, 2019.
As part of the announcement, the new visual identity for AUArts was unveiled. The new design was developed by Will and led by Art Director/Designer Allison Chambers. Born in Edmonton, Alberta, Chambers obtained her Bachelor of Fine Arts with Honors at ACAD in 2005. Her degree is complimented by a Diploma with Honors from Capilano University’s IDEA program. After completing her education Chambers gained six years of experience in the marketing and branding industry, which led her to her role as an Art Director and Designer for Will. She has been recognized for her work in several creative roles including her volunteer work at the Art Gallery of Calgary in 2004, three years (2007-2010) at the Vancouver Art Gallery organizing exhibitions and collections with the curatorial team, and at the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity as an in-house designer in a four-month summer position in 2012.
"It was an honour to return to ACAD to take on the re-branding, as it was where I spent my formative years as a creative,” said Allison. “The new identity challenges perspectives and encourages people to continuously see things differently, as the students, faculty, staff and alumni push to do every day."
The new logo challenges perspectives by highlighting “Arts” in a distinct red and inverts it. The logo, and supporting brand platform, defies traditional design-thinking and stands out from the other undergraduate university logos in Alberta, Canada and beyond. Alberta University of the Arts first official day of operations was Friday, February 1, 2019.
