Learn to read in the 21st-Century! Really.

ACAD’s first symposium of the year gets back to writing basics with a visual arts twist.

For two days in February (12-13, 2016) students, teachers, artists and anyone excited about the future of writing, graphic novels, screenwriting, and script are gathering at ACAD for WHERE NEXT? a creative writing, narrative, film and contemporary art symposium.

Co-ordinated by Calgary's 2014-2016 Poet Laureate, and ACAD Instructor, Derek Beaulieu, WHERE NEXT? features nationally and internationally-recognized artists, Calgary teachers and practitioners, ACAD staff and students -- all focused on creative writing and radical pedagogy. Join us for two days of cutting-edge conversation and performance on the role of creative writing within the arts and how writing overlaps teaching and learning.

Beaulieu is excited to be shining a spotlight on the creative community coming together in Calgary. “There is so much cutting edge inquiry happening right here in our city that I’m thrilled to help bring in artists from across North America in a celebration exploring the future of writing, text and visuality.”

Symposium attendees will enjoy keynote presentations by Concordia University Director of the Initiative for Indigenous Futures Jason Edward Lewis, Portland-based indisciplinary artist Francesca Capone, and Toronto-based author and poet Liz Worth, a performance by recent BMO 1st Student Art Invitational winner Tamara Himmelspach, and a diverse list of panelists including: Christian Bök, Victoria Braun, Cheryl Foggo, Sarah Grodecki, Wendy Hill-Tout, Joe Hospodarec, Heather Huston, Silas Kaufman, Larissa Lai, Natalie Lauchlan, Alex Link, Naoko Masuda, Ashok Mathur, Jen Miziuk, Natali Rodrigues, Riley Rossmo, Devyani Saltzman, Nick Sousanis, and Andrew Wreggitt
