ACAD Students’ Association Reflects on Growing Support

Fill your home with one of a kind artworks at the 25th annual Alberta College of Art + Design (ACAD) student Show + Sale November 26-28, 2015. Support Calgary’s emerging art scene with work being represented from several of the College’s programs including: painting, drawing, glass, fibre, printmaking, sculpture, photography, ceramic, and jewellery.

The three day public market hosts a VIP First Night Fundraiser, Thursday November 26 offering attendees the exclusive opportunity to view and purchase over 3000 pieces of original art the first evening of the sale, with proceeds from the $25 ticketed event supporting student scholarships.

Admission by donation opens to the public Friday, November 27 from 12 pm – 7 pm and Saturday, November 28 from 11am – 5 pm.

With over 30% of ACAD graduates going on to start their own business and pursue entrepreneurial work, Show + Sale provides students with the opportunity to develop the skills and experience necessary to build a successful entrepreneurial art practice after graduation.

“Since Show + Sale was first founded, students have really evolved the show to focus on enhancing the quality and presentation,” notes Sarah Grodecki, General Manager of ACAD Students’ Association (ACADSA) and Painting alumnus. “ACADSA strives to support and encourage this by offering students a variety of seminars and hands on workshops throughout the year, with local and internal experts in the arts and culture, business, and academia communities.”

Providing students with an educational, real-world introduction to entrepreneurship in Calgary’s broader arts and culture community has always been the intention of Show + Sale, with proceeds from all purchases directly supporting the ACAD student body.

“At ACAD my instructors encourage the experimental and technical side of art making,” states fifth year print student Claire Coutts. “I’ve participated in Show + Sale since my first year on campus. The sale has not only supported me in tackling the tuition and materials cost of my education, but has enabled me to market my prints and grow my professional practice as an artist.”

Having grown exponentially over the past 25 years, Show + Sale attracts many loyal art enthusiasts. If you’ve never been, now is your chance. Join the ACAD Students’ Association this November in support of the advancement of art, craft and design education that fosters local entrepreneurship, builds community and develops the creative economy here in Alberta and beyond.
