ShowOff! Competition & Exhibition Attracts High School Students From Across Canada

Calgary, AB:  Canada’s most talented and creative high school students are vying for more than $20,000 in prizes in the annual Alberta University of the Arts (AUArts) ShowOff! Competition.

Hundreds of students from across Canada have entered the 2021 juried competition to win exciting prizes including university entrance award scholarships and grants to directly support their high school art programs.

This year’s shortlist of Grade 10, Grade 11, and Grade 12 students have just been announced and an online exhibition featuring the stunning shortlisted 2021 entries is now online: ShowOff! Art Competition | Alberta University of the Arts (auarts.ca).

ShowOff! invites high school students in Grades 10 through 12 to develop individual art pieces using whichever medium they prefer to be judged by a jury panel.

Successful applicants have the chance to win more than $20,000 in prizes, including the Grand Prize, “Best in Show” - an AUArts scholarship worth $5,000.

Additionally, winning students’ high schools are also supported and benefit when a student wins. Each award winner’s high school receives money to assist in purchasing art program supplies.

“I felt very grateful and glad to have participated in ShowOff!” says Daniella Szeoke, 2020 second-place tuition award winner and current student at AUArts. “Not only was the award extremely helpful for covering my first semester, but it helped confirm the idea that taking huge risks pays off.”

“I was heavily encouraged by my high school art teacher to apply. She introduced me to the competition and was very excited when I agreed to enter,” says Tucker Latreille, 2020 third-place tuition award winner and current student at AUArts.

Many students like Daniella and Tucker find Show Off! supports their dreams to be an artist, while also supporting their high school directly. The high school grant component for winners allows AUArts to give back to the community and recognizes the importance of fine arts courses in high schools to ignite a passion for art, craft and design and inspire the next generation of emerging artists.
