ACAD’s SHOW OFF! art competition awards $30,000 in prizes to high school students, including tuition and art program support

Calgary, Alta. (July 3, 2018) - Alberta College of Art and Design (ACAD) is proud to announce the details of its annual SHOW OFF! art competition starting Saturday, July 7 until Saturday, July 14, 2018. This Art + Design exhibition professionally showcases pieces of work from high school students—grades 10, 11 or 12—located across Alberta, Northwest Territories and Nunavut.

“As a high school student, the idea of having my work in a show that ACAD was hosting was unbelievably exciting,” said Janeen S., previous Show Off! winner and current ACAD student. “That day in the Illingworth Kerr Gallery when they called my name as the recipient of the first year tuition is still one of the happiest moments of my life. It solidified ACAD as the place I was meant to be, and I was overjoyed that because I won, a grant was awarded to my high school art department!”

The juried exhibition will display a large number of student’s art, craft and design work that will compete for over $30,000 in prizes. The grand prize is a SHOW OFF! Entrance Scholarship which pays for a student’s first year at ACAD and provides a matching grant to support the winner’s high school art program.

"SHOW OFF! connects ACAD with secondary school art, craft and design programs and educators across Western Canada on a true grass roots level," said Craig Wright, Director of Student + Enrollment Services. "It empowers our young emerging artists to connect with their peers and weave themselves into the fabric of the Canadian creative community. The future is bright for ACAD as we move towards becoming Alberta’s only art, craft and design university and SHOWOFF! helps us get a glimpse of what has been, what is and what will be coming our way. We are proud to expand the program to our neighboring provinces and territories in 2019.”

A reception on Saturday, July 14, 2018, will celebrate the exhibition and announce the award winners.
