High School Students Show Off for $30,000 in Prizes Including Full Tuition to Alberta College of Art + Design

2016 Show Off! Winners

Art Exhibition and Competition Inspires High School Students from Across Canada

Calgary, AB – Showing off is not always a bad thing – especially when it leads to inspiring students to consider pursuing an education in fine arts. The Alberta College of Art + Design (ACAD) is hosting SHOW OFF! High School Art + Design Exhibition from Saturday, June 10 until Saturday, June 24, 2017. More than 175 high school students from across Alberta, Nunavut and the Northwest Territories competed all spring to display their work in a professional exhibition at ACAD’s Illingworth Kerr Gallery (IKG) located in the Main Mall.

“SHOW OFF! is an exciting program that continues to support art education and development in our high schools,” said ACAD President and CEO Dr. Daniel Doz. “It is paramount that as a premier Alberta art, craft and design institution, ACAD nurtures creativity and innovation, and celebrates art exploration and expression in today’s youth.”

60 pieces of art will be on display and the annual juried exhibition will award more than $30,000 in prizes including the SHOW OFF! Entrance Scholarship, which pays for a student’s first year at ACAD and provides a matching grant for an equal amount to support their high school art program.

“When I talk about SHOW OFF!, I think about it as the beginning of their artistic portfolio for my students and how featuring this exhibition on their artistic CV is a fantastic opportunity,” said David Nielsen, Art Teacher at Bishop O’Byrne High School. “Previous students of mine received some of the art prizes and it has made a huge difference. It’s opened up doors for them to live a creative life and that what it’s all about.”

A reception on Saturday, June 24, 2017, will celebrate the exhibition and announce the award winners.
