Distance and Proximity

Distanz und Nähe

Distance and Proximity is dedicated to Bernd and Hilla Becher’s clear and strong perceptions, as well as to the photo artists who were their former students at the Dusseldorf Academy of Fine Arts.

Bernd and Hilla Becher have been professors at the Dusseldorf Academy since 1976, and belong among some of their students to the most influential contemporary photographers. At the same time they belong to the most important artists on the international scene.

The exhibition consists of 76 pieces which are in part of very large formats. The selection of the pieces was based upon the common method of approach chosen by the photographers, as well as on the diverse individual artistic statements and positions of the 10 artists.

Distance and Proximity is part of a series of exhibitions entitled "Photography in Germany from 1850 until today". The series was conceived and curated by Wulf Herzogenrath and the Institute for Foreign Relations and reflects in self-contained exhibitions important aspects of the technical as well as artistic medium of photography.
