International Applicants - Admission Requirements
Applicants are considered international if they are not a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or do not hold refugee status. If you are a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or have refugee status, please refer to the domestic academic requirements.
Note: Canadian citizens completing an international curriculum must follow the international applicant requirements listed below.
Academic Requirements for International Curriculums
To be considered for admission, international applicants must meet minimum academic qualifications based on their curriculum. All applicants must also submit a portfolio and statement of intent (details below).
General International Curriculum
- High school diploma or leaving certificate (equivalent to the Alberta High School diploma)
- Minimum 60% overall average in final year of study
Canadian Curriculum (Completed Outside Canada)
- High school diploma
- Grade 12 English
- Three additional Grade 12 academic courses
USA Curriculum
- U.S. high school diploma
- Grade 12 English (minimum 1 credit total)
- Minimum 60% overall average in final year of study
British Pattern Curriculum (IGCSE/GCE, A-Levels, BTEC)
General Certificate of Secondary Education (GSCE/IGCSE) with a minimum two O-Level subjects, each with at least a C final grade.
AND
General Certificate of Education (GCE-A or GCE-AS) with a minimum three A-Level subjects, each with at least a C final grade.
- One of these must be English (either O Level or A/AS Level) to be exempt from submitting an English Language Proficiency test
- The same subject at the O-Level and A/AS-Level cannot be used twice
- Two AS-Level subjects may be used as one A-Levels subject
- A minimum overall average C grade across the five accepted subjects is required
BTEC Qualifications
- Minimum Level 4 qualifications (such as Higher National Diplomas, Nationals, or Foundation Diplomas in Art, Design, and Media) are accepted
- Must achieve at least 32 UCAS Tariff Points
Advanced Placement (AP) / International Baccalaureate (IB)
AUArts accepts applicants completing the AP (College Board) or IB Diploma Programs. Additional documentation may be requested, and ensure you also meet the English proficiency requirement. For more details about course transfer credit to AUArts degree programs, please refer to the transfer credit assessment page.
- To Meet Academic Requirements:
- IB – High school diploma, and final score of 3 or higher in 3 courses including English.
- AP – High school diploma, and final score of 3 or higher in 3 courses including English.
- Transfer Credit:
We accept both Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB) courses to meet academic requirements. Courses must fit into the program you are applying to be eligible for transfer credit and be presented through official, final transcripts.- IB - Final, official score of 5 or higher for transfer credit. Higher Level (HL) courses are eligible to be considered for first-year transfer credit.
- AP - Final, official score of 4 or higher for transfer credit.

English Language Proficiency
If English is not the primary language of instruction at your most recent school, you must submit results from an approved English Language Proficiency test.

Portfolio & Statement of Intent
All applicants must submit:
- A digital portfolio of 12 original artworks (compiled into a multi-page PDF or Word document)
- A Statement of Intent (300–500 words) in essay or cover letter format

Submitting Transcripts & English Language Proficiency (ELP) Test Results
Interim transcripts (unofficial or in-progress) and ELP test results can be uploaded to the AUArtsApply Portal, and are due February 1 for priority admission, or June 1 for general admission.. The portal is only accessible after successfully applying to your desired undergraduate program and paying the application fee.
Official and final transcripts must be sent to AUArts directly from the school or governing body where you live before the deadline of August 1.
Official ELP test results must be sent to the AUArts Admissions office directly from the issuing education organization. Depending on which service you choose, there may be an option to send your results directly to AUArts from a self-service portal.
