Redeemed Plates

Fred Douglas

Redeemed Plates presents a series of photographic/mixed media images suspended in brown vitrines jutting out from the wall. The feature component in these works are photographed brass plates embossed with pictures taken from the 17th century Dutch and 18th century picturesque genre. They invite the viewer to consider their newly created environments, thus what is domestic is reopened for new metaphoric associations. The hi-jacking of these kitsch objects to the contemporary moment raises questions around the use of the serial, the nostalgic impulse towards collection and its aesthetic processes.

This is the first opportunity that a Calgary audience will have to view the work of this Canadian west coast artist. Curated by Valerie Greenfield.
