Faces and Places Opening Reception

Painting: Chris Cran, 'From Puberty to Poverty', 2001. Illingworth Kerr Gallery Collection. The painting is of five people standing in front of three seated people, over a nondescript background.

Richard Rhodes, former editor of the national magazine Canadian Art, said in 2005, "… in Calgary the present is framed in terms of the recent past."¹ This exhibition embraces that idea, showing how the Alberta University of the Arts (AUArts) is more than just an art school—it's a vital part of Calgary's artistic history, where stories and relationships from the past continue to inspire a thriving community of artists and designers.

Since the 1970s, AUArts artists and designers have significantly influenced vibrant artistic communities in Calgary. Faces and Places showcases this rich heritage with over fifteen stories. They highlight important connections, spaces, and moments that shape the city's lively cultural identity.

By sharing stories, events, and archives, the exhibition reveals how generations of students, faculty, and their wider networks documented their journeys and formed long-lasting relationships. Across various backgrounds and art forms, from collaborative studio projects to community organizing, AUArts artists and designers have built enduring bonds that continue to influence Calgary's dynamic art scene.

Organized by the Illingworth Kerr Gallery in celebration of the Alberta University of the Arts’ 100th Anniversary in 2026.
