AUArts Alum longlisted for Sobey Art Award

Congratulations to tīná gúyáńí (deer road in Tsuut'ina) collective (seth cardinal dodginghorse BFA '19, Painting and Glenna Cardinal) for being longlisted in the 2022 Sobey Art Award Longlist in the Prairies and North region.

In 2014, they were forcibly removed from their homes and ancestral land on the Tsuut’ina Nation Reserve, for construction of the multilane Southwest Calgary Ring Road. Their multidisciplinary practice has explored their connection to land, and the effects of the environmental/psychological damage caused by the Ring Road. Their work is an act of cultural preservation, and a protest against ongoing settler colonialism.

Founded in 2002, the Sobey Art Award is one of the most generous prizes for contemporary artists in the world. Organized and presented by the National Gallery of Canada, the award propels the careers of artists through financial support and recognition in Canada and beyond.

This year a total of $400,000 in prize money will be awarded with five shortlisted artists featured in an exhibition at the National Gallery of Canada. The winner will be announced at a gala ceremony this fall.
