Envy's pull

The materials used were wires, lace, clay, watercolor, acrylic paint, foam, and 2 canvases. Each feather was hand sculpted by me, placed on a foam with wires to hold up the wing, and dyed lace to portray the flow of the wind.

This piece has 2 parts, and a story to tell. This piece is meant to revolve around how envy can interfere with our perception and ability to socialize.

Canvas A (Hand reaching for the phoenix)
The person's point of view is placed on a smaller canvas, an empty background, showing the phoenix’s wings extending out. This symbolizes how close minded this person is, how the phoenix outshines them, soaring the sky, essentially having “freedom” and power. Viewers can see the person falling on the other canvas, reaching for the phoenix, driven by envy and completely ignorant to the danger they put themselves in.

Canvas B (Person falling into body of water)
On the contrary, the phoenix sees a much broader view. The waterfall in the background symbolizes peace and healing. Whilst humans are known to be social creatures, phoenixes are believed to exist alone for eternity. The phoenix is trapped in eternal solitude, yet it’s not consumed by envy. The phoenix’s view is placed on a much larger canvas with a detailed background to show regardless of what it lacks, it chooses to admire the life the person had lived, rather than be envious towards them.
