Facade

Acrylic paint

Facade is a piece I made in an exploration of the implications of identity, and what it truly means to embody oneself. Inspired by a Sandman comic cover by Dave Mckean, my piece was made with the intention of exploring how admiration and interests play into who we become, and how originality and authenticity is found in a world in which it feels everything has already been done. One of my biggest struggles in life has been a lack of comprehension of myself, I often find that my perception of my own being is limited, critical, and possibly inaccurate. These challenges have prompted me to consider what qualifies as who a person is; are they the person we perceive them as, the person they perceive themselves to be, or is true identity something beyond our comprehension? We are all just moving through the world, the unstoppable force of time propels us through experience and stops for nothing. Perhaps who we are is intangible. Within the array of faces around my own, I wanted to explore the range of one's being, and how those planes of self comprehension and outward expression are all truly connected through a tethering to oneself.
