Connected in 10,000 Lines

Dip pen, India Ink, paper, and cardstock

Ink has always pulled me in, I take pleasure in the delicacy and permanence of the medium, and the simplicity of black and white amidst our world of greys. Dipped in pitch ink, the nib’s contact with paper simply makes sense. This piece centres around the relationship I have with my dad, the quiet distance bridged by thoughtful moments - minute in terms of seconds yet somehow infinite in connection. The image is based on a photo my dad took while biking in Italy. The alleyway leading to unknown adventures reminded me of trips up mountains and along rivers with my parents, searching for magical creatures and stories in ways that grow harder as I get older. The drawing is a way to reconnect with that part of myself and that side of my relationship with my dad, while the text reveals my current bond with him. The printed words are excerpted responses from my interviewing him and the handwritten texts are sections from my journaling during his absence. Together, these 10,000 lines portray our connections through simple moments that affirm the worlds in which we meet.
