Rice Fields

Oil Paint

Although I’ve lived in Canada for almost my entire life, there will always be one place in the world I hold dearly to my heart: Nepal. When I think of my home country, I picture bustling cities overflowing with chatter, quiet snow-capped mountains, and hardworking farmers tending to the rice fields to provide for their families and their country. That sense of shared interconnectedness means everything to me, which is why I wanted to capture the emotions of individuals who celebrate their blessings in these fields. Whenever I travel back to Nepal, my favourite pastime of viewing the boundless rice field valleys reigns supreme. Their unique ripples of neon green, vibrant orange, and piercing yellow cover acres of cultivating land, which stand out to the human eye but appear ordinary to the countless farmers and villagers who call these fields home. The swirling heaviness of the sky in my oil painting reflects the monsoon season, where continuous rain showers fall upon and nourish the various regions of Nepal. The soft strokes of purple, navy blue, and pearl grey emulate the elasticity of clouds about to burst into tears. During the monsoon season, I love seeing the way the rain transforms the land, showering the fields in vivid colours, flowing in smooth ripples, twists, and curves. To me, the monsoon is not just a weather pattern; it is a way of welcoming the rain with gratitude, leading to peace, renewal, and new beginnings. Its simplicity encapsulates something far greater; fond memories of children and families splashing through muddy fields, grateful for the blessings rain brings.
