An Afternoon at Grandpa's

Gouache and UV ink

Objects and artifacts have the power to carry time, memories and significance in ways personal to each of us.

This illustration is a slightly modified version of my grandfather’s apartment, to how I remember the space as a kid. The old stickers, his art desk, snacks on the table, the height wall, all carry an ephemeral vision of the memories tied to these objects. As an art teacher, his way with words was very memorable. Listening to him talk and watching him make art became something that stayed with me.

To others, this is just an illustration of an apartment.

To me, I see more than the objects. Within them, I can see the memories I had with him both as a grandson, and a student. Using UV ink, I illustrated what I see being in that space.

This space means more than feeling at home, it marks the beginning of my own path of pursuing art. I will always remain grateful for the time I spent with him, the afternoons at grandpa’s.
