Explore by Chris Cran

The Royal Canadian Geographical Society was founded in 1929 with a mission to make Canada better known to Canadians and the world. Its fellows past and present include Capt. Joseph-Elzéar Bernier, who established Canadian sovereignty across the Arctic Archipelago; Frederick G. Banting, the co-discoverer of insulin; Alice E. Wilson, the country’s first woman geologist; Louie Kamookak, a leading Inuit historian and expert on the lost Franklin Expedition; and Roberta Bondar, the first Canadian woman to go to space.

In this series of 23 optical-illusion portraits, artist Chris Cran (Dip ‘79, Painting and Honorary MFA) celebrates the accomplishments and discoveries of some of Canada’s greatest explorers — and invites viewers to become explorers of their own perceptions. Presented in partnership with the Royal Canadian Geographical Society.
