Wild Suburb

This series of photographs features a fictional hybrid creature who investigates Western Canadian suburbs.

Mitch Kern (Associate Professor, Photography) is fascinated with the dual nature of man as an animal and our place in the world we have created, sometimes at odds with our more basic nature.

Mitch Kern is a photographer who produces portraits exploring the human condition’s beauty and sadness. Born in 1965 and raised in New York City, he moved to Los Angeles with his family in the 1970s as a teenager. His photography career began at 15 when he set up a darkroom in his suburban San Fernando Valley home.

Mitch has an extensive publication record and client list and has been featured in 75+ exhibitions, including over a dozen solo shows. He has an MFA in photography from Penn State University and a bachelor’s from the University of Maryland. He has taught photography at Penn State, Central Missouri State and Louisiana Tech Universities and is currently an Associate Professor at Alberta University of the Arts.
