Art Gallery of Alberta in Edmonton, Alberta

In Black and White

The exhibition features a broad selection of Drever’s work, which have been created solely in black and white.

In Black and White is a timely exhibition of the work of Edmonton-born artist Dean Drever (Diploma ‘98, Sculpture). The collection features a broad selection of Drever’s work, created solely in black and white. Often utilizing images and symbols of white male power and authority, in Drever’s work, black and white speak to the drive for power and control and define two opposing sides or ways of viewing the same thing. Black and white can be seen as positive and negative, foreground and background, reality and myth and right and wrong. In Drever’s work, black and white must co-exist, just as an oppressor shares the same space with the oppressed. As a viewer, however, we find ourselves positioned in the imaginary space between black and white, where we can create innumerable shades of grey and countless possibilities.

This exhibition is organized by the Art Gallery of Alberta, curated by Catherine Crowston and presented by the Capital Power Indigenous Art Fund.
