When Life Gives You Lemons
This piece is based on my personal experiences with chronic illness, largely that of the reactions I receive from others. More often than not, when someone finds out about my illness, their first reaction is to try and cheer me up, usually in a less-than-helpful way. Taking inspiration from the infamous phrase: “When life gives you lemons, make lemonade.” I wanted to share the reality that making a good thing from a bad thing, is not a simple task. There are some things I just can’t do let alone do in the way I’m expected to. The image of a bag of lemons with a straw sticking out illustrates the ridiculous oversimplification of the catch phrase as well as the corner cutting that is necessary to life with chronic illness.
