2024 ShowOff! Artwork Kaili DeCarle

Labels

This piece is very personal and has a self insert; Me in my room trying to decide what clothing item to put on/choose. At first glance it appears that with “labels” and “choosing” as key words, that I am talking about the clothing items, but that is not the case. I wanted to convey the idea of society putting labels on everything, and how anything and anyone has to fit in a certain mold or stereotype. In recent years I've struggled with my identity and fear of being labeled things particularly due to the way I dress, act, look, or even my interests. I always feel pressured that I need to have a label or that I fit into only one mold or group of individuals, when in reality I just want to be. I don't want to be labeled, I don't want to have to be put into this stereotypical group, or have to choose between one thing or the other because society as a majority cannot help but think this way. I am not a label, no one is, and I think this piece of art conveys a strong and meaningful message that you are not a specific type of person because society tells us that we are. It is an artwork about finding one's personal identity while living in a world that constantly ‘labels’ and judges things, and that you don't have to fit into just one group.
