Devil in the Box

This piece is an interactive piece, with visual, auditory and textural aspects. The Jack is a crochet sculpture with polymer clay eyes and bells at the tips of its horns, jingling every time it moves. The Jack appears to be almost jumping out of the box, because of the perspective created by making its head proportionately larger, and extending its neck. It sits inside a wooden music box that plays the theme of Studio Ghibli’s Castle in the Sky when the song is cranked. This song was chosen because although it is beautiful and dreamy, the story it represents holds a darker truth, much like the devil in disguise. This is representative of how the Devil is often depicted as a temptress, luring people into following their selfish greed. This piece depicts a modern interpretation of the childhood toy the Jack in the Box, and the folklore behind it. The horns imitate a jester’s hat, with the checker pattern and bells that incorporate influences from both the Devil and jester to keep it playful and childlike with sinister undertones.
